Famous Business Partnerships That Changed the World

You might have a great idea for a business, but maybe you don't know how to get it going. Or perhaps you've always wanted to start a new business, but you just don't have the right idea. Either way, you'd benefit from working with a business partner.

Many of the world's most successful companies were founded by not one person working alone, but by a partnership. Here are some of the business world's most famous partnerships.

Apple: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak

Behind Apple's success were two men named Steve: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The two became friends in 1971, when Wozniak was in college and Jobs was in high school. They both worked at Hewlett-Packard and were introduced by a mutual friend. In 1973, Jobs asked Wozniak to help him with a circuit board project for an arcade video game.

In 1976, Wozniak developed the first Apple computer. Jobs convinced Wozniak to start their own company. The two sold some of their own possessions (including Wozniak's calculator and Jobs's van) to fund the business. And thus Apple Computer was born, one of the most successful computer companies in the world.

Instagram: Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom

Krieger and Systrom were in their 20s when they started Instagram. The precursor to Instagram was a photo- sharing app called Burbn. Systrom built Burbn to let users turn their photos into professional-quality images. Krieger was one of Burbn's first users before he joined with Systrom to develop Instagram. Amazingly, Instagram attracted 10,000 users in its first few hours in the Apple App Store.

Systrom and Krieger had both participated in Stanford's Mayfield Fellows program before they eventually teamed up. Clearly, their business partnership was a success. Now, the app has millions of users and was sold to Facebook for one billion dollars.

SoulCycle: Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice

SoulCycle has a unique vision: exercise that benefits the mind, body, and soul. Co-founders Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice were introduced in 2005. Both wanted to create a fitness routine that felt less like work and more like fun. In 2006, they opened their first studio.

Many other people believed in Cutler and Rice's vision. Since its founding, SoulCycle has expanded to various locations and sold countless products.

Google: Larry Page and Sergey Brin

The founders of one of the world's most successful companies met as PhD students at Stanford. They began developing a search engine as a research project. Their search engine was unique because it analyzed relationships between websites rather than simply combing the web for search terms.

Page and Brin first ran their company out of a friend's garage. They continued to work together at the company for years as it expanded and acquired many other companies. Today, Google is worth $498 billion.

McDonald's: Richard and Maurice McDonald

The McDonald brothers' story is the story of the American dream. Their father was an Irish immigrant who worked at a shoe factory.

After running a successful drive-in hot dog stand, the McDonald brothers started their first barbecue restaurant in 1940. In 1948, they developed the "Speedee Service System," ensuring customers were fed quickly. In 1953, they opened the first McDonald's franchise with the iconic arches logo. However, the arches were not shaped as an "M" until 1968.

With rapid expansion throughout the globe, McDonald's has become one of the most successful franchises in history. Today, McDonald's serves 68 million customers daily in 119 countries.
